American Mahjong

How a game goes

Mah Jongg and scoring

Every hand’s value is printed on the card. The discarder pays double and the others pay once; on a self-drawn win all three pay double; jokerless doubles it again.

Where do points come from?

The number to the right of each hand on the card is its value, written here as v. The harder the hand, the higher the value: most are 25–30 points, while quints, concealed hands and Singles & Pairs are worth more.

Who pays what?

SituationDiscarderOther two players
Win on a discardPays 2vEach pay v
Self-drawn win—All three pay 2v

If the whole hand uses no jokers at all (jokerless), every payment above is doubled. Singles & Pairs hands can’t use jokers in the first place, so they don’t get the jokerless bonus.

The dealer doesn’t win double or pay extra. In a wall game, nobody pays.

Worked example

Take a hand worth 25 points:

How you winDiscarderOther two playersYou collect
On a discard−50−25 each+100
Self-drawn—−50 each+150
On a discard, jokerless−100−50 each+200
Self-drawn, jokerless—−100 each+300

That’s why throwing the winning tile hurts: for the same hand, the discarder pays twice what everyone else does. When an opponent looks close to Mah Jongg, discard carefully.

Winning right after an exposure

If you call a discard to expose a group and then find your hand is complete and declare Mah Jongg, it counts as winning on that discard: the player who threw it pays 2v. It is not self-drawn.

The results screen

The results screen: the winning hand, who paid what and the running totals

After each game you’ll see who won, the winning hand, what everyone won or lost this game and the running totals for the session. Press “Next game” to keep playing; the deal moves to the next player.

Sessions and stats

  • A session is several games in a row, with points carried from game to game. The deal moves to the right each game.
  • Daily deal: one deal a day, the same tiles for everyone in the world. Play every day to build a streak.
  • Stats: the lobby shows how many games you’ve played, your Mah Jongg rate, total points and best win, plus how many times you’ve won with each category. Stats are saved on this device only.
